Faith Restored curated JJ Pinckney, is a 8 member group exhibition conceived from the emerging art house Found Wonder, for the purpose of celebrating creative persistence & self belief. The fine art world exists in a multi fold of levels and spaces, oftentimes concealed based on one’s race, environment, resources, educational positioning or exposure. This exhibit applause's emerging independent artists on their ability to navigate the challenges of self reliance, while establishing themselves as radical staples in an evolving art world.

Project statement: "I am a sculptural artist that assembles materials to create masks / sculptures that hold space for the preservation of black and indigenous stories, while also reflecting upon my identity. The masks are used to follow global  stories of the intersection between black and indigenous people that encourage my spirit. Finding strength in the  Mardi Gras Indians, Indigenous North Americans , and Afro stories in Caribbean Carnival. Encouragement  of these stories have influenced a purposeful placement of personal identity into the masquerade. Materials being sourced from personal life or stories from my own family. Masking has allowed me to express"

Jade Williams

Jade Williams

Project statement: During Jade’s deep dive into natural healing, herbal medicine, and meditation, she has been

connecting with her African and Indigenous American ancestry, where for centuries they had

been using herbs and materials from the Earthto make art, tell stories and weave destinies.

Using hemp fibers hand dyed with herbs, flowers, leaves and vegetables, she continues this

legacy by paying homage back to the land.

In her exhibition piece, “Fruiting Bodies”, Jade creates the image of the not so much an

animal, and not so much a plant, Fungi. She chose to create the image of fungi because it is

the bridge between life and death and hidden connectivity in our ecosystem. She highlights

that fungi can be seen as a metaphor for us humans, and the life cycles we experience in

our everyday lives. We live and die and are born again every day through every experience.

The groundedness of the fungi symbolizes being rooted to the earth, while spreading our

roots (mycelium) throughout the soil, connecting with other forms of life near and far.

Through her alchemy, she encourages the practice of awakening the divine power we all

hold within ourselves.

Rafaella Braga

 Rafaella Braga

Project statement: Born in Goiânia, Brazil, the artist eschewed academic education and worked multiple jobs in order to sustain and trace her path, beginning with graffiti and, after a tumultuous adolescence, ultimately finding shelter in painting. Braga, disheartened by the few opportunities that her homeland could offer at the time, seized the moment and moved to Berlin in 2018 in search of new experiences and inspiration.“Once I’m in the studio,” she says, “I put on a hip-hop track and I eat while looking at the space in search of inspiration”. I write mostly in Portuguese, but sometimes also in English,” she explains. “I treat the canvas like a diary, an attempt to transcribe my inner thoughts.”

Project statement: "Periphery as a place of possibility, beauty and mystery. The constant concern of my work has been to investigate these possibilities for creating an artistic language from a Caribbean tropical context that is in balance with the dichotomy of the notions of multiculturalism; the plasticity in adaptation and cultural evolution. 

 

Plants and Literature: Essays in Critical Plant Studies examines the manner in which literary texts and other cultural products express our multifaceted relationship with the vegetable kingdom. The range of perspectives brought to bear on the subject of plant life by the various authors and critics represented in this volume comprise a novel vision of ecological interdependence and stimulate a revitalized sensitivity to the relationships we share with the photosynthetic brethren. 

Another dialogic dimension of the series entails a sustained engagement between Western and non-Western philosophies and human attitudes to plants. This “cross-pollination” of different fields of knowledge and experience will become possible thanks to the fundamental role plants play in human life, regardless of their background or neglect. 

 

Exploring luminosity and color these ideas embark on the places where color comes into being and where it fades away, probing when it begins and when it ends both in the imagination and in the material world. Ideas that draw on neuroscience, philosophy, novels, films, and writing. Those who loathe color have had as much to say as those who love it. Following the chronology of writings from Baudelaire to Baudrillard traces how artists have affirmed color as a space of pure sensation, embraced it as a tool of revolution or  as voyage to places where colour comes into being and where it fades away, an inquiry into when color begins and when it ends, both in the material world and in the imagination. 

 

Focused on the selection and arrangement of objects sequences and particular narratives. In order to bring them to light, The idea of conceiving structures and framing devices for their presentation. To present objects, ranging from the natural to the ordinary, the artistic to the ethnographic, giving form to art works that underscore their identity and inherent meanings. At these Walter Benjamin-istic moments of  possession/ownership is the most intimate relationship that one can have to objects, not that they come alive in us; it is us who lives in them” absorbing the psychic investment of their owners, things paradoxically possessing something of their possessors. Exploring the psychological, aesthetic, cultural and ritualistic aspects of objects as well as their context."

Project statement: “Isaiah,” is a narrative piece on the beauty found in mundane moments in time with a loved one, it is biographical in nature. The nude subject and bedroom setting are meant to evoke a sense of intimacy for the viewer. The subject matter is very personal to the artist, a clear memory of watching their partner get ready for his day, fresh out of the shower. It is a piece crafted with intention, from the grandness of the scale to the personal portrayal of a man near and dear to the artist. On September 15th, 2021, Manar R. Balh promised their partner they would paint them one day, and eight months later, this is the delivery. This painting is a declaration of love, the kind of love that bell hooks wrote about. It exists not only as a portrait and figure study, but a reflection of what matters to the artist.

Parris Douglas

Parris Douglas
 

Parris Douglas (b. 1992)  is a self taught multidisciplinary artist who specializes in  abstract expressionist artworks that centers and embodies Afro-futuristic portraiture. He has encapsulated the priory of city instinctual knowledge that has been passed through the roots of New York core urban culture. Through his careful envisioning of his native stomping grounds of Harlem, Douglas vibrates nostalgia and intensity of the common, sometimes uncomfortable, face-to-face encounter.

 

With the grips of recanting the loss of his father and fallen friend at 19. This jarring experience opened up a new light within. In this moment, Parris decided to channel the grips of angst and lost to channel his vision of expression. Alchemy was a result, channeling landscapes scattered upon adjacent high rises and ever changing domestic infrastructures. Without knowledge from the world, a unique artistic voice was born. 

 

Douglas approaches his work with strong provocation of exploration, devotion, and vulnerability. The blueprint of his style is rooted in his unique makeshift of urban 1980s graffiti culture, cross blending cultural observation and introspective truth. The mix-media approach attempts to depict the American Black face through inspections of unique physical & complex identities. Spray-paint, oil, and acrylic play the role as servants that build and collide the parallels of his bold tale of humanity & adventure. The exaggerated emotions in his compositions plainly feature intrinsic themes of the consciousness within.

Lovers known as twin flames . 

He was blinded to the fact he was being selfish. It hurt her eyes to see life for what it really is. They opened up their souls to one another , but why is it this painful?

Ambitions replaced intimate moments 

With angst and uncertainty. She didn’t want to feel 

Last on his list to attend to. 

He was looking for THE  moment 

Not knowing he was currently living in it."

Project statement: "It’s all good, peace unto you and yours…but no. “NO.” is a commentary on boundaries. Having boundaries is not a rejection, rather an attempt to maintain a healthy relationship, both with yourself and another. Despite the pleasant colors and relaxed figure, note the swollen, ringed finger: no matter how well-practiced you are, saying “No” is always uncomfortable."
